Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.
Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend–the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.
Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters? Fans will not want to miss this thrilling conclusion to Marissa Meyer’s national bestselling Lunar Chronicles series.
Winter is the concluding book of The Lunar Chronicles and is the fairytale retelling of Snow White. It’s filled with action, romance and friendship. Not to mention, bravery and courage to stand up for what they think is right. About the difference between the privileged and the poor, and the discrimination between the Earthens and Lunars. Marissa Meyer managed to write Winter so beautifully and cohesively despite having to juggle with the multiple point-of-views and the chaos that’s happening.
The friendships between each character is incredibly touching and wonderfully portrayed. Even though they may be far apart, they will worry about each other. Each character has their own diverse roles and without any one of them, it wouldn’t be complete (as cheesy as that sounds, it’s true). I’m impresssed at how Marissa Meyer managed to incorporate some elements of the classical Snow White into the story while it may be predictable, it was intriguing and captivating to see it happen in another world.
Generally, I get confused when I read sci-fi and most of the time, I put those books with such element on hold for a long time. But The Lunar Chronicles, though have science fiction in it, wasn’t hard to comprehend. Marissa Meyer has a way of putting information across without making it feel overwhelming.
There’s so many parts in the book where I just squeal and be an absolute fangirl because all the couples are just so cute. I can’t get enough of them all. They are just simply amazing and they complement each other so well!? Thorne and Cress really stood out to me in Winter, he just brings out the playfulness in shy Cress and is such a great leader when Cinder has no clue.
Let me know what you think about Winter, because I loved it so so much. It’s probably one of my best reads ever and the series is one of my top few.
SPOILER SECTION STARTING. GO READ WINTER BEFORE COMING BACK FOR THE DISCUSSION PART, BECAUSE IT’S AMAZING AND YOU’VE GOT TO READ IT!!
there may be short rambles that are going to be incoherent and every thing is going to be all over the place, please do pardon me (I’m too excited)
guys, I can’t believe it has ended!! I kept gushing and squealing at all the couple scenes!!! they are so cute together!! i went to my notebook for recaps and all i can see is “thorne and cress kiss”, “cinder and kai kissed” and “jacin and winter kissed!!”. omg, i couldn’t contain my heart at all. ugh!
and also, throughout the book every one is being captured or controlled or going to distract their enemy so that the rest can escape EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. they just cannot catch a break, can they? it was horrible every time that happens, because questions just start running in my head though nothing extremely bad happens to them. iko limbs get torn, cinder falls off the palace into the lake, scarlet and thorne are in the fingerless club, kai has to marry levana and crown her as empress (ew). nothing too bad. well excpet for wolf, poor wolf, when he got even more modified than before, i felt so much hatred for levana. she’s awful and vile. i love scarlet for she loves wolf regardless of his appearance (though, he may scare the kids around the farm a little longer and a lot more than she thinks).
oh! and ryu! poor ryu! he got sacrificed by jacin so that winter could live, you’ll always have a place in my heart. but, winter was a little annoying at times though brave. she’s a little too optimistic when she brought scarlet to find the modified wolves in the cave and she became so weak that scarlet has to step up to her role. scarlet’s so feisty and sassy, she was incredible when she had to face and protect winter from all the wolves- an absolute alpha female.
winter’s a hard character to decipher. she’s only sane when jacin’s there to anchor her. but without him, hallucinations and her demons find her and she can see blood seeping from the walls of the palace. that’s horrifying. a thing that’s commendable about winter is that at a young age, she saw what her lunar powers can do to others and she just decides to stop using her powers even though she’s going absolutely insane and delirious. she reminds me a little of luna lovegood from the harry potter series. though a little loony, but still lovable and influential in their own ways. also, how cute is it that out of all the gawking and heart-eyed boys, winter only wants jacin to notice her and only his ‘you are beautiful’ matters. my my.. my heart.
i can’t wait to read about iko and the guard in wires and nerve. i hope iko gets her happily ever after too, after all the things she had done for cinder and the rest, i think she deserves it (along with pretty gowns).
the ending was so satisfying. when they ate cake together, it was amazing, it made me crave for cake. & cinder being cinder, dropped some on her dress. well done, queen selene. cress and thorne confessed their feelings to each other & thorne asked cress to be on his crew while he’s being all nervous and stumbling on his words. *swoon* how cute is that!!! when kai hints to cinder if one day she would become an empress. i hope the wedding in stars above is theirs (or maybe cress and thorne). oooooo i can’t wait!
the revolution felt so slow since they had to start from stratch. most of the rebel/resistant aspect of the books i’ve read are pre-planned but cinder and the rest had to start from the bottom and make their way to the top without any resources other than themselves. it was wonderfully written, marissa meyer managed to move my heart so many times. when cinder’s video came up and she announced to the citizens of Lunar that she’s Princess Selene, i had a sudden surge of pride & felt so blessed that we have cress on our side because she’s one hell of a hacker and a friend.
thorne was hilarious and his dialogues are always the best. alongside iko’s. my favourite of thorne would be “scarlet and I are going to start a missing-fingers club. we might let cinder be an honorary member.” ha! that’s amazing! i remember bursting out laughing in the middle of the night. that’s so thorne.
i was waiting for the moment for winter to use her powers but i didn’t expect that she use it on scarlet to stab aimery nine times. though aimery probably deserves it, that’s a little too overboard and winter scares me some times, especially so in this particular scene. I think she was being too overwhelmed and afraid that her friends would get hurt that she seized the chance to just kill off aimery. and, i don’t even want to think about the body count during the war (i hope it isn’t as bad as the battle of the bastards in GoT cause that’s terrifying).
Similar to the rest of the series, Winter is somewhat predictable. I’m going to justify by saying that my knowledge of how snow white (the classic) works, and how my heart and mind just want the good guys to win contributed its predictability. However, it doesn’t diminish the experience of reading Winter.
let me know what you think of winter! are you excited for stars above? whose wedding do you think it is? which couple do you like the most? let’s discuss!
“It makes you look very tough. No one would ever suspect you’re just a gentle goose on the inside.”
(my aesthetic for winter)
